Hack LAB

Located at the library's Lakeshore Branch, the Hack LAB gives you access to 3D printing, vinyl cutting, lasering and more.  Curious about why the library is getting into hacking?

Once Upon a Time, There Was a Scarf
Two laser cut scarves

Fashionistas know that laser cut fabrics are all over runways this year, and now they’re here in Innisfil! In a previous post, I mentioned how great the laser cutter slices through polyester felt. So naturally, I had to find out what else is made of polyester, and I came up with polar fleece. It is 100% polyester, and can be used for many different things. Being cold and snowy, I decided to make a scarf or two.

As always, I used InkScape to create...

How to think in 3D
How to think in 3D

Quick! Draw me a pig! Okay, now draw me a pig in 3D! When it comes to designing an object for one of our 3D printers, this general challenge comes up quite a bit in the ideaLAB. Any old thing that you are trying to design needs to exist in 3 dimensions, so the first step is putting your brain firmly in 3D mode. Laser Cutting Christmas
Decorative wooden trees

Lasers are good for more than blowing up death stars; you can use them to make holiday decorations! I like to make things, but tediously cutting shapes out with scissors is really not for me, and don’t even get me started on sewing! I’m more of a digital crafter. This is why I love the laser cutter at the ideaLAB. My designs are all made using the free open source software InkScape. It’s a graphic design program and free for anyone to download on any...

300 Lines of Code?!
Hour of Code Program Image

This evening at the ideaLAB we set up computer stations to teach people how to write their first lines of code.  By the end of the night we had 13 coders completing well over 300 lines of code!  We'll be leaving things set up for the rest of the week and anyone who wants to take part in this "Hour of Code" event can drop in to write as many lines as they want.  Who knows?  Maybe you'll be the next Zuckerberg!

We're talking digital citizenship - and people are listening!
Transliteracy at the library

What exactly is ‘Digital citizenship’ and what is our role as a public library? At IPL we see this as helping our community members engage with technology safely, wisely, and in a way that encourages participation and confidence.  We’re often talking about transliteracy, the idea that literacy extends far beyond reading comprehension, and have developed spaces and programs to help our community develop technological literacy. This focus has generated some interest from the folks at...
