Innisfil Public Library Receives Dorothy Duncan Award

Innisfil Public Library was presented with the 2007 Dorothy Duncan Award by the Ontario Historical Society on Saturday, June 14th at the University of Guelph.  The Dorothy Duncan Award is presented annually to a non-profit organization for outstanding service to its region.

The Women’s Institutes in Ontario are well-known for their role in preserving local history through their Tweedsmuir Histories.  The Library received the award for the digital preservation of significant historical information contained within the seven volumes of the Cookstown Tweedsmuir Histories.  The three year project employed standard archival methods in order to maintain the integrity of the information and was one of the first such projects in Canada to be undertaken.  Through the vision and support of the Cookstown Women’s Institute, the Cookstown Tweedsmuir Histories are now accessible to a much wider audience at http://www.ibidnet.ca/.

As stated by Stella Webster, Past President of the Cookstown Women’s Institute, the “Innisfil Public Library has been a community leader in recognizing opportunities and initiating projects, such as the Tweedmuir digitization, in order to highlight the importance of our local history”.

Anne Kell, Innisfil Public Library Board Member, Susan Baues, Cookstown Branch Manager and Joan McLean, curator of the CookstownTweedsmuir Histories were on hand to receive the award.

Library Receives Infrastructure Grant

The Innisfil Public Library Board is delighted to be able to announce that the Town’s grant application to the Province of Ontario’s Municipal Investment Initiative (MII) for $2,850,711 has been approved. The funding will be used for the construction of the Cookstown Library and Community Centre that is planned for Cookstown.

Lillian Owen, Library Board Chair, was ecstatic. She notes that “the Board can now build a library that fully meets the needs of the community” and looks forward to working with the Town on the fulfillment of this project.

Ontario Public Library Accreditation

Accreditation is a prestigious honour, representing the highest recognition for public library administrative and service excellence.

In June 2006 our Library underwent a demanding and comprehensive audit process. The Churchill, Stroud and Lakeshore Branches all passed and are accredited for a period of five years. Our Library chose not to have the Cookstown Branch audited as we were preparing to build a new branch there. That location will go through the process once the new branch is up and running.

Library Board Chairperson Lillian Owen received the Accreditation plaque at the Ontario Library Association Superconference on February 1, 2007. These plaques hang in each of the accredited branches for our customers to view.

We are proud to be among 21 libraries in the province to have achieved accreditation.

Gift of Words™

The Gift of Words™ Book Collection, funded by Starbucks Coffee Canada, is the result of a grant administrated by the ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation.  This collection is composed of 53 new children's books, both fiction and non-fiction, five new children's books in CD format and three new children's magazine subscriptions.  The Stroud Branch is very pleased to have been selected to receive this funding, which also allowed for the purchase of shelving for this special collection.    The collection is very well used and is being enjoyed by all ages of the young-at-heart!
